On a Thursday afternoon

On a Thursday afternoon
As mundane and inconspicuous
As they come,
I had the best time of my life.

She noticed me
Even before I entered the room.
And thus it was a surprise to none
To behold the sight that was I.

Looking as though I had played dress up,
I held a bag full of presents in my hands.
Gifts of well wishes
Meant for a farewell I wanted not.

We chatted over lunch.
For hours and hours long after,
Joy and laughter
Was the only sound I knew.

Tearing the wrappers,
Their faces lit up, one by one.
Happiness, amusement and
The quiet through the reading of a 2 page long card that could only mean one thing.

She asked me “Would you stay?”
I couldn’t resist.
So now I’m back
Post farewell.

But what does it matter?
Life is an unexpected series of mishappenings.
Saying my goodbyes ahead of time
Is assuredly better than no goodbye at all.

One thing I’ve learnt
Is that you should carry an open heart wherever you go.
For you may find love
In the most unexpected places.

  1. Oh my goodness I can feel that cool sensation that comes with ‘leaving’ and ‘goodbyes’ while reading your post .. interesting how I share the same perspective as you with regards to being open hearted and always expecting the unexpected. Little moments really do carry deep significance and greatest happiness. Love your blog !!

    1. Thank you so much I’m so flattered that my poem was able to invoke that feeling in you! Yes, sometimes the best things come when we least expect it 😊
